Bela: The Ribera del Duero wine among the 100 best in the world
Bela 2021 and four other Spanish red wines have managed to position themselves on the prestigious list of Wine Spectator magazine
The Bela 2021 wine has become the only Ribera del Duero red that appears among the one hundred best wines in the world in 2023 according to the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator. Only five Spanish wines have been able to make it into this international top 100 and, of them, Bela is ranked 79th on the exclusive list.
It is a wine that is made with grapes from the 74 hectares of vineyards owned by the Villalba de Duero winery and that «brings together the roundness, balance and history of an iconic region in the world of wine» expressed from the organization. Each year, Wine Spectator editors publish a ranking after tasting wines
from around the world during the previous twelve months and select the Top 100, based on quality, value, availability and the emotions they provoke. This annual list pays tribute to successful wineries, regions and vintages around the world.
In the 2023 blind tastings, editors tasted more than 9,200 wines, of which 5,819 scored ninety points or more. That was the basis for creating this list after analyzing four aspects: quality, quality-price, availability and, especially, the so-called X factor (the relevance and backstory of the wines).
Spain has achieved five of the hundred positions and the Ribera del Duero region only one, with Bela 2021, which takes the same name from the winery in which it is made, belonging to the CVNE group since 2021, honors the ancestors of this family, since the name honors Sofía, daughter of the co-founder of the winery in 1879 Eusebio Real de Asúa, and in turn great-grandmother of the current managers, who in the family environment called “Bela”.
